Isla Colon
Where to go: Bocas Del Toro islands
Isla Colón – The Heart of Bocas del Toro
Isla Colón is the main island and cultural hub of Bocas del Toro, Panama, offering the perfect balance of convenience, natural beauty, and Caribbean adventure. As the gateway to the Bocas del Toro archipelago, Isla Colón is where most travelers arrive, stay, and explore from—whether you’re visiting for beaches, surfing, snorkeling, jungle landscapes, or simply to enjoy laid-back island life. With paved roads, growing infrastructure, vibrant neighborhoods, and easy access to tours and transportation, Isla Colón is the ideal base for discovering everything Bocas del Toro has to offer.
Bocas Town: The Lively Center of the Island
At the southern end of Isla Colón lies Bocas Town, the energetic center of activity. This is where you’ll find the highest concentration of restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, supermarkets, banks, ATMs, and essential services. Bocas Town is also home to Bocas del Toro International Airport, making arrivals and departures simple and efficient. Most boat tours, water taxis, dive trips, and island-hopping excursions depart from the docks here, connecting travelers to nearby islands, beaches, and marine parks throughout the archipelago. Whether you’re booking snorkeling tours, dolphin watching, scuba diving, or transport to the mainland, Bocas Town is the logistical heart of Isla Colón.
Big Creek: Calm Waters and Easy Access
Just north of Bocas Town is the Big Creek area, where Bocas Stoked Monkeys is located. Big Creek is known for its calm waters, relaxed atmosphere, and easy access to both town and beaches. This area offers some of the best swimming conditions near our cabins, with sheltered coves and gentle seas that are typically safe year-round. Beaches in Big Creek are ideal for swimming, floating, kayaking, and paddleboarding, making it a great choice for families and travelers looking for calmer ocean conditions while still being close to the action.
Paunch & Pipa Beach: Surf Meets Swim
Continuing along the paved coastal road, you’ll reach the Paunch area, one of Isla Colón’s most popular zones for surfing, beach time, and oceanfront dining. Paunch Beach is a world-class reef break that attracts surfers from around the globe, especially during swell season. Just nearby is Pipa Beach, a unique and sheltered swimming spot where ocean conditions are generally calm and safe year-round, regardless of swell. This makes Pipa Beach one of the best places on the island for swimming while still being close to surf breaks. As you move further up the road toward Bluff, surf conditions become more powerful, and swimming should be done with caution.
Bluff Beach: Wild, Scenic, and Untamed
At the northern end of Isla Colón lies Bluff Beach, one of the longest and most dramatic beaches in Bocas del Toro. Bluff Beach is known for its powerful waves, strong currents, and raw natural beauty. It’s a favorite spot for experienced surfers and long beach walks but is not recommended for swimming due to rip currents. The road to Bluff Beach is paved up to a certain point; after passing Skully’s, it turns into a dirt and sand road leading through jungle and coastal landscapes. Bluff Beach is also an important nesting area for sea turtles during certain times of the year, adding to its ecological significance.
The Interior & Road to Boca del Drago
Traveling inland and west from Bocas Town, the main road crosses the center of Isla Colón through areas such as Colonia Santeña and smaller local communities. This central corridor offers a quieter look at island life, with local villages, farms, and lush greenery. The road continues all the way to Boca del Drago, and most of this route is now paved, with sidewalks and bike lanes in many sections. Thanks to recent infrastructure improvements, biking or running from Bocas Town toward Boca del Drago is both safe and enjoyable, making Isla Colón a great destination for runners, cyclists, and active travelers.
Boca del Drago & Starfish Beach
On the western side of Isla Colón, Boca del Drago offers calm Caribbean waters, local restaurants, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. This side of the island is ideal for swimming and snorkeling due to its protected waters. From Boca del Drago, visitors can access Starfish Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Bocas del Toro. Known for its shallow, calm waters and bright orange starfish, Starfish Beach is perfect for swimming, floating, and relaxing. It’s an easy day trip from anywhere on Isla Colón and a must-visit attraction for first-time visitors.
Bird Island & Marine Attractions
Many tours departing from Isla Colón include stops at Bird Island, a small rocky island known for its seabirds and dramatic scenery. Along with snorkeling reefs, coral gardens, and dolphin-spotting areas, these excursions highlight the rich marine biodiversity that surrounds Isla Colón and the greater Bocas del Toro archipelago.
Getting Around Isla Colón
One of Isla Colón’s biggest advantages is accessibility. Much of the island—especially Bocas Town, Big Creek, and the road toward Boca del Drago—is paved and easy to navigate. Bike lanes and sidewalks make it simple to explore by bicycle or on foot, while taxis and rental options provide flexibility for longer distances. Whether you’re riding to the beach, heading out for a run through the center of the island, or biking to Boca del Drago and back, Isla Colón is one of the most traveler-friendly islands in Panama.
